Levels from Starter to Advanced

Duration: 25 weeks with the schedule of two 1-½ hour classes per week.

General English

 

*This program can be covered in a Private class (1-3 participants) setting*.

 

General English courses usually focus on the four basic skills-- listening/ speaking/ reading/ writing. In addition, they usually involve cultural skills. Students improve their language level and maximize their ability to use English in various everyday situations. While focusing on the four skills, students practice pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, and conversation skills.

Although, we use textbooks as the main students’ learning resource, we regularly supplement classroom activities with authentic materials, such as, movies, music cd’s, Internet, newspapers, magazines. Our general English courses are designed for students of various levels—from Starter to Advanced level. They are designed to be learner-centered and should improve English skills in a variety of discourse settings.

 

In our courses, students should develop their communicative competence through interactive activities and simulating real-life situations.

 

Program Objectives:

 

Starter:

  • Provide basic English skills that are needed in an academic environment.

  • Improve fluency in speaking, listen and respond in English clearly.

  • Familiarize with the use of everyday vocabulary.

  • Provide an opportunity to learn about different parts of the world (cultural norms) through interaction with peers in pair and group work.

 

Elementary:

  • Improve listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills through role-plays, presentations, group work and pair work.

  • Enable students to be acquainted with learning strategies.

  • Learn about sentence and paragraph structures.

  • Continue to introduce and expand on the fundamentals of English.

  • Students are taught to build on basic skills through communicative exercises and extension activities.

 

  Pre-Intermediate:

  • Emphasizes the expansion and development of basic conversational functions, essential grammatical structures, and simple reading skills, include a broader range of vocabulary items.

 

Intermediate:

  • Focuses on the combination of basic language skills acquired at the lower levels with more sophisticated language functions, structures, and comprehension skills.

  • The goal at this level is to facilitate the transition from practical language skills to more involved structures, such as, critical thinking, broader cultural topics, complex grammar, and academically oriented vocabulary.

 

Upper- Intermediate:

  • Focuses on enhancing open-ended communication skills, accurately using complex grammatical structures.

  • The goal at this level is the expansion and development of the students’ authentic language capabilities.

  • Expand a variety of presentation skills, developing formal and informal written and oral communication.

 

Advanced:

  • Emphasizes on the expansion of open-ended communication skills through a variety of presentation skills.

  • Refining fluency and critical thinking skills.

  • The goal at this level is to further develop and enhance learners’ authentic language capabilities through a variety of high- level, student centered activities incorporating advanced conversation, academic essay writing, presentations and analytical reading skills.
